God’s design for community
The idea of community was God’s design.
Let's go back to the very beginning, where the grand story of community unfolds. In the book of Genesis, we find God looking at Adam and realizing that being alone just isn't right. And so, with a tender touch, He crafted Eve from Adam's rib. It was an act that went beyond creating another human; it was the divine blueprint for what we now call "community."
Fast forward to the Book of Acts, chapter 2. Jesus had completed His earthly journey, and His disciples were about to receive the Holy Spirit. They were stepping into their roles as builders of the Church. It's in this moment that we catch our first glimpse of genuine Christian community.
Acts of community in action
Acts 2:42-47 paints a vivid picture of this early Christian community. Here, we witness their unwavering commitment to five essential principles:
Learning Together: They devoted themselves to the apostles' teachings. Learning and growing in faith together was at the heart of their community.
Praying Together: They prayed as one. In unity, they brought their praises, needs, and supplications before the Lord.
Sharing Generously: They gave. In this tight-knit community, they sold their possessions and shared the proceeds with those in need.
Life Together: They lived life together. Sharing joys and sorrows knitted their hearts together in a bond stronger than any other.
Breaking Bread Together: They dined together. Sharing meals became a symbol of unity, thanksgiving, and the Lord's presence among them.
Embracing the fullness of community
The heart of the early Christian community was undoubtedly one of openness and inclusivity. They followed the model they had witnessed in Jesus, who lived a life that transcended boundaries and embraced diversity. Their gatherings extended beyond the boundaries of their homes and into the temple, reaching into the streets and neighborhoods.
The key distinction is this: community is not about preserving what we have but extending a welcoming hand to those who long for connection. It's a missional endeavor that knows no bounds, defined by acts of love, compassion, and grace. When we open our hearts and our community to those in need, we mirror the divine blueprint of community as God intended.
Embrace God's Design
Let's remember that community is not something we can redesign to fit our preferences. It stands as a beautifully crafted masterpiece, perfect in its original form. It's about coming together, not for the sake of the community itself, but for the sake of those who are yet to find their place within it. True community, as designed by God, reaches out and brings people into the fold, nurturing them, guiding them, and revealing the profound love of the Creator.
In closing, let us embrace the fullness of community and all the ways God has designed it. This blueprint, as old as time, stands unwavering and ready for us to follow. As we do, we embody the true essence of Christian community, extending our hands to those who seek refuge, solace, and the love that can only be found within God's divine design.
